Career Tools for Excellence II: Internship

Tools 2 presentation

Career Tools II Presentation Fall 2009

The Career Tools for Excellence II Internship program is designed for students who have completed Tools I to have
an opportunity to utilize their "tools skills" in a workplace environment. It came about through Tools Team discussions as a way for students to further hone their skills and become marketable in their field as well as a way to answer the frequent requests from community businesses for interns. The internship adds value to the students' experience as a way for them to showcase their skills, make invaluable contacts, and get paid for their work.  Students spend 64 hours in an internship on campus or in the community and create a personal e-portfolio that showcases their “Tools skills”.

Faculty work with local businesses and on campus departments to match students with a paid position within their desired profession.  Each student works with his or her supervisor to create an intern project that is the focus of their time at the internship.

Students have gained valuable hands on experience while working as interns.  One former student was hired by the local business where she completed her internship. This web site was recently updated as an intern project done by Tools I & II student Evelyn Rosefield.

Testimonials:

Tiffeny Flies:
“Words can’t describe how grateful I am to the Tools II interns that I have had the honor of working with over the last two years.  The intern work that has been done for the Columbia College Child Care Center and the Foster & Kinship Care Education program has had a sustainable and positive impact on these programs.  Examples of projects include: organizing a resource library for Foster parents, hosting a training on burnout for kinship care providers, implementing a recycling, composting, and gardening project for families which included fundraising activities, food program auditing to ensure compliance with funding terms and conditions. It has been exciting to see how professional, organized, bright, and committed the interns have been on their various projects. Clearly, the Tools II course is providing a  strong work ethic framework for our communities future work force.”
