Career Tools I Spring 2011

An internship is a great way to put what you've learned in the classroom to work, build your resume, get experience in your field of choice, and find out if your desired career is a good fit
for you.

How many hours per semester do interns work?
A total of 64 hours per semester, roughly 5.5 hours for 12 weeks.

Do I have to take Tools I to enroll in Tools II?
Yes, you have to successfully complete Tools I before you are eligible to enroll in Tools II.

Are students covered by workman's comp during their internship placement?
Yes.

Why should I work with an intern?
Working with an intern is a great way to meet potential employees, give back to the community, and access student expertise for your company.

Are internships paid?
Most are. We seek paid internships for our students whenever possible because we believe that the relationship between intern and work site is different and potentially more beneficial if it is a paid position.

Who do I contact if I want to be an intern or want to hire an intern?
Contact Alicia Kolstad at (209) 588-5333 or kolstada@yosemite.edu

What happens if my internship isn't working out?
The first step is to work with the Tools II lead faculty to raise the issue. Likely a meeting will be scheduled
with the student, site supervisor, and faculty to decide what the best course of action would be.
An alternative internship site might be available depending on when the issue arises.

Is their class time involved?
Yes. Interns meet as a class weekly for an hour and five minutes.

Can I take my e-portfolio with me?
Yes. The goal is that your e-portfolio is a personal tool you can use in pursuing your career of choice.

How often is Tools II offered?
Tools II is offered once a year in the fall semester.

Can I use my internship experience on my resume?
Definitely! The goal of the internship is to give you hands on experience in applying your Tools skills.
It is a great resume builder.

Student Testimonials:

Dianne McGee:
"Kathy Schultz's presentation was very informative and insightful. I printed copies of her power point presentation for my team members and myself to use for taking notes and keep on hand as a reference guide. Since I have never been astute at project management, I tried to pay particular attention to what was presented to us."

Nancy Miner:
"Employees must demonstrate multifaceted interpersonal and organizational skills in order to complete tasks in a professional manner and to reach their highest potential within their chosen career. The Career Tools for Excellence course helps give individuals the skills they need to have a successful career instead of a mediocre one."
